Abstract:
Sustainable development has been a popular approach to address environmental and social challenges since the late 1980s. However, despite this, it appears that global environmental and social change have reached new levels of concern around the globe. Under these circumstances, it appears that sustainability in general, and sustainable tourism in particular, may not offer sufficient models for community development. Resilience studies have become popular in recent years as an alternative approach that has a greater focus on contemporary challenges. Resilience in a tourism context may offer a more effective approach than sustainability in developing countries.
