Abstract:
In this analysis, we assert that Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is an emerging national symbol for Mexico. During Kahlo's lifetime, it was her husband, Diego Rivera, who was Mexico's most famous artist. However, since the 1970s Kahlo has steadily gained acclaim in the international art world, as a woman of historical importance in Mexican culture, and as an iconic global symbol for alternative identities. This presentation will focus on Kahlo's increasing notoriety within her own country and the ways in which her image and her art represent Mexico around the globe.
